(Refs 1, 2)\u00a0 When an expert is asked about cause at the case- or insurance-claim assessment stage, he wants to know about accident location.\u00a0 The category tells him a lot.<\/p>\n<p>He thinks differently according to the category.\u00a0 This is the same as him thinking differently according to the type of <em>structure<\/em>, <em>component<\/em> or <em>material<\/em> that fails in the built environment, as posted in earlier blogs. (Ref. 3)<\/p>\n<p>You mention location in your briefing on the accident and the expert goes through the same process in forming an initial hypothesis on cause &#8211; an initial oral report &#8211; as for a structure that fails.\u00a0 He considers::<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Your briefing <\/span>&#8211; The location, category, technical issues and facts in your description of the accident<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">His experience<\/span> &#8211; What he&#8217;s learned investigating slip, trip and fall accidents<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Published material<\/span> &#8211; The helpful information out there &#8211; a lot &#8211; on the different categories of accident location<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are many categories. (Refs 1, 2):<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Level walkway surface<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Level walkway surface and water<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Floor mats<\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; For example, mats can move as I found in one case<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Changes in level<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Lawns<\/strong> <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; Example, wet grassy slopes<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Ice and snow<\/strong> <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211;\u00a0Including <em>black<\/em> ice on a sloping asphalt driveway that I slipped and fell hard on last winter.\u00a0 Also <em>skating<\/em> ice that I fell on a couple years ago but I was wearing my ski helmet and only hurt my pride<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Ladders<\/strong> <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211;\u00a0Reaching too far when on the upper rungs of a ladder and falling which happened to me a few years ago<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Porches and balconies<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Roads and sidewalks<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Parking areas<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Trucks<\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; Getting in and out of trucks and also hurting yourself when securing load<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Work place and construction sites<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Residences (single and multi-family)<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Play grounds and recreational facilities<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Swimming pool decks and locker and shower rooms<\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; Note how many have &#8220;C<em>aution: slippery-when-wet\u00a0<\/em><em>signs&#8221;<\/em>, and skid-resisting mats on <em>dry<\/em> sauna floors<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Saunas<\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; Floors can get wet from water bottles and dripping bathing suits<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Ramps<\/strong> <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; I was very conscious recently of a very slight ramping-up to the entrance of a car show room.\u00a0 It was subtle but there &#8211; and it was wet.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Bathrooms<\/strong> <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; Examples: walk in showers and tubs<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Kitchens<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Stairs<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Handrails and guardrails<\/strong> <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; Examples: rail graspability also rails that are too far apart on wide stairs<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Elevators<\/strong><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\">&#8211; For example,\u00a0when they don&#8217;t stop exactly at floor level<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>Escalators<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>You might be interested in knowing<\/strong><\/span> that falls in the work place are the number one preventable loss type.\u00a0 And in public places, falls are far and away the leading cause of injury.
